I will be comparing two idents these are channel 4 and e4, both for the same broadcaster but very different idents used to represent them. Firstly the target audiences are both different, channel 4 has more of a older mature audience as for the beginning a car driving in what looks more like the countryside which is realistic it represents it has real life shows but something everyone can relate too where as it changes to more of a unrealistic side where it spells out 4 in lights that are in the sky this shows its very diverse as its not only for those who like to watch shows with they can learn from, it has humour and entertainment for everyone. It sums up the channel brand very creatively although more of the older generation would be attracted to watching it more.
On the other hand e4 is more based on entertainment so their ident is based on creating a bubbly, colourful and unique effect, this respresents more of a younger target audience as bright colours are used to make it look more modern and lively, more of a fantasy look where random things are appearing which all started off as a normal room became a pond and grass, that shows more unrealistic shows will be shown such as misfits. It also suggests itll be more about pleasing theyre audience with humour and shows they can enjoy watching rather than having something to learn from.
Theyre both aimed at male and female which shows a similarity between the two, also any race, religion and sexual orientation, this widens their target audience as more people would watch it and can interact with them as its for anyone without feeling ostracized.
The socio economic backgrounds are also diverse, where as channel 4 make it look more mature it shows its more for people who are educated and in the middle class and above, where as e4 make it look more about fun and a visual sight people can enjoy so its more for lower class and above as they would be attracted by the image content.
Both the idents dont have voiceovers over them but are both recognised for their audio, although both theme tunes sound similar channel 4 has more of a western jazz sound where as e4 has more of a comical sound, both audios represent the channel brand well and clearly as they both go with the ident itself to make the audience remember them not just visually but they can hear their theme song and recognise it straight away.

Ident
A channel ident is a small advert which represents the channel brand that the audience can remember them. The key characteristics of a channel ident is by using a logo or corresponding colours which is a strong visual respresentation of the channel.
Another key characteristic is defined as the length as its important to know how long the audience will sit there and watch it for before they get bored. They also would include a audio which is easy to remember such as a simple beat/rhythm or a theme tune so they have more to remember them by. A voiceover also helps the audience understand more about the advert and who they are, so its not just for them to read and watch themselves, as there are also announcements to be made the brands know how long to keep the advert going for or end it before a film as it will include more important information in a short period of time rather than making a whole blank advert of them talking.
As there are a variety of multi channels all competiting against other channels to make sure the audience watches them it puts more pressure on them to made their ident more recognisable and eye catching which can tell them more about the brand itself and what is stands for. As channels now spend millions of pounds on just a ident they all have to be more unique and trendier than each other such as bbc2 and channel 2 who want to me as modern.
